"Often when I would sleep in my parents' bedroom as a child, I would lie awake for hours watching hundreds of ghostly figures in wheelchairs come in through the bedroom door and out through the closet in a line."
- Isabel Rodriguez

About The Exhibit

Unexplained noises are heard while you’re alone in an old home. There’s a sudden rush of cold air as you enter an historic property. A chill of goosebumps run down your spine. Strange lights are seen in the sky, defying the limits of modern technology. You quiver with amazement to a drag performer bringing to life an eerie nightmare of paranormal pop culture. You shiver at the not-so-urban legend of a strange winged humanoid creature on the outskirts of town.

Could there be some random, rational explanation for these apparitions and sensations, or could it be something within the realm of the paranormal, with a supernatural explanation that defies human understanding?

In The Paranormal Realm: Beyond the Lore at The Gallery at CCBC Essex, curator Derek Pentz (aka Zenobia Darling) has invited a select group of talented artists and creatives to explore the question: is the paranormal realm more than just mythology and folklore? â€‹

Artists for centuries have been using their creative practices to explain this mysterious domain around us, and this tradition carries on into modern times with contemporary methods. From using graffiti to make humorous art out of paranormal legends and popular culture, like the Mothman, to creating a unique version of old-fashioned Ouija boards to communicate with the spirit world; from using photography to make ghosts come to life using drag, to a documentary art film starring a campy, Drag Rockstar going on an ethical paranormal investigation. Each artist in this exhibition explores the realm of the paranormal in their own style.

Is the paranormal realm more than just fun lore and entertaining television, or is it a vital lifeline to humans? Find out for yourself when you immerse yourself in The Paranormal Realm: Beyond the Lore.
